Sochi Heo Ryeon(1808-1893) takes a very special position when we take a view of the 19th century Joseon’ s paintings & calligraphic and literary world. He was specially loved by King Heonjong(憲宗) and became well known, being highly evaluated by Kim, Jeong-hui(金正喜), the best painter at the end of Joseon Era. He associated with wide range of people from royal family to ordinary people. But there aren’ t any detailed records through which we can catch from miscellaneous matters occurring at countryside to situations at upper literary world in Seoul and furthermore situations at the royal palace.
Therefore, research of Heo Ryeon is not to analyze the course of success of a painter who came from a poor family at island(珍島) and became well known only through his painting skill but to study not only paintings and calligraphic works drawing custom and profile at that time but also situation of literary world of Joseon at the 19th century, That is, it is not only to research paintings of an individual painter, Heo Ryeon but also to recompose or restore the 19th century Joseon’ s paintings & calligraphic works and literary world through a painter, Heo Ryeon.
New materials related to Heo Ryeon excavated till now by ‘The Society for the Study of Sochi (小癡硏究會)’ are more than 100 pieces including documents and his works. Through newly excavated materials, we could know that his real name was not ‘yu(維)’ which was better known but ‘Ryeon(鍊)’. And as the result of analyzing his autobiography 『Sochi-Sillok(小癡實錄)』, we could also find that his consciousness intends to admire the powerful thoroughly. As to his works, it is a very important fact that unlikely as known till now, after his middle - age, he didn’ t draw just stereotyped and habitual works but he continuously did drawing practice and new trial.
I think that some people’ s negative evaluation of Heo Ryeon’ s works is mainly because of the tendency of his works drawn at his old age. At his old age, he was extremely withered in various aspects because of his supporters’ death, economical difficulty, etc. At that time when he wandered almost as a hanger-on, he produced plentiful works impromptu proper for local officials’ or landlords’ taste which were habitual and repetitive and those works veil his true character. Works produced at that time are mainly composed of small paintings of four gracious plants, peony blossom. landscape which were easy to produce. Therefore, I think that general close examination of change in the tendency of Heo Ryeon’ s paintings would be possible only after including overall analysis of easily drawn paintings and painting drawn with his heart and soul.
One of the main causes enabled Heo Ryeon to go on tours which was almost similar to wandering about even at his old age was because of steady demand of his paintings and his disposition to wander about. Although these causes are important, emphasizing his inner taste preferring to high official would be closer approach to the real situation. For his attachment to relationship with distinguished persons and his repetitive visit to Seoul when he was young and at his old age reflect his innate respect for central artistic world and his way of thinking preferring to high official.
In addition, placing people who had lived and made activities in Seoul and Heo Ryeon who was from a country and came up into the capital at his old age, under same category would be another thing we should reconsider. Heo Ryeon’ s view and consciousness of the world, who was born at a very poor family at an island and succeeded in life only through his excellent painting skill, are remarkably different from those of the people such as Jo, Hee Ryong(趙熙龍), Jean Ki(田琦), etc. who were born at affluent family in Seoul and studied paintings and calligraphic works under Kim, Jeong hui.
Additionally, Heo Ryeon who was a professional painter, having left unprecedently many data in our history of painting, is considered to be one of the rare painters whose real research in the aspect of social history is possible. From now on, I intend to try to recompose and restore actual situation of the 19th century Joseon’ s culture through supplementary research of his life, the view of the world, the concept of arts and works. etc.
