On November 1, 1503 ambitious cardinal Giuliano della Rovere became pope. Julius II(1503-1513) like his predecessor from the same Rovere family, Sixtus 4th(1471-1484), showed great interest in the building projects and interior decorations of Rome and the Vatican. Among his ambitions the most scandalous nonetheless the most influential project in view of the following course of architectural history is the rebuilding in the new style and manner of the Renaissance of the Constantinian basilica of St. Peter’s of the early Christian era. It is known that among the project designs presented to the pope Bramante’s was chosen. Although Bramante’s original design of 1505 was amended and revised according to liturgical as well as technical and structural considerations of the building, final shape of the New St. Peter’s retained centralized aspect of the original design. This paper has reconstructed Bramante’s original project design of the New St. Peter’s based on the extant drawing by the architect and foundation medal struck by Caradosso and Serlio’s obsession for the centralized structure, the most ideal form of classical architecture, in this case a Greek cross inscribed in a square. This study has also tried to reconstruct the building process and to see the extent of the original aspect of Bramante’s design realized at the time of the architect’s death in 1514.
