This paper explores the change of symbolic culture of Chinese food in modern society from the perspective of cultural change. In the section of food symbolic culture in market economy, the writer discusses the influence of market economy on the traditional dietary action. for instance, the phenomenon of children eating birthday cake and sending the cake as a gift to the old on birthday in modern cities; under the influence of trade ,some traditional food consumption activities of suburb residents have greatly changed; with development of the tourism industry, some traditional dietary customs of minor nationality have shown particular charm in the folk tour; the traditional dishes symbolizing "good luck" emerge in the market economy and bring forth the fresh constantly, which makes it playback extraordinary splendor in the modern society. In the section of food symbolic culture under the impact of modern civilization, the writer discusses the influence of modern civilization on the symbolic culture of Chinese traditional food. For instance, under the influence of antitheism, some dietary activities of minor nationality in religion are decreasing gradually. As the ideas about bearing changed, some symbolic meanings of foods symbolizing good luck have changed from pursuing "more children, more happiness", "have sons as early as possible" to prepotency; while lucky foods with the meanings of human talent coming forth in great number and so on, to adapt the development of society, the quality of food and the order of having dinner are not used to mark people's role and students; instead, it is only a distinction of people's economic conditions and an outer representation of the roles of "host and guest".
