This study examines factors influencing organizational learning. Among many factors that influence organizational learning, we focus on agglomeration externalities as an external factor and firm heterogeneity as an internal factor. We draw hypotheses from studies on agglomeration externalities and the capability perspective. To test our hypotheses, we focus on American subsidiaries of Japanese multinational companies. We propose that knowledge spillover from agglomeration positively influences learning activities of a subsidiary. In regards to firm heterogeneity, we propose that technological capabilities of a parent company negatively influence learning activity of subsidiary while technological capability of subsidiary positively influence learning. The results from negative binomial regression lend partial support to our hypotheses.
