Yol(烈)(the chastity and fidelity to a spouse) which is related to love and marriage between man and woman has been emphasized as a virture of the most important oriental morals. Therefore the study of Yol is essential theme to understand a phase of oriental people's mental world involving Korean and Chinese. Literary works apprehend life from all view points describing individual life and mentality frankly and symbolizing a society and the spirit of the times metaphorically or implicatively. Here through the two works, Sanyouhwayoga(山有花女歌) by Korean and Gongjakdongnambi(孔雀東南飛) by Chinese, the characteristic of Yol is made clear and the kernel of the plot is studied centering around descriptive development through the comparing and the analyzing two works with the background of the original works, heroines' marriage, their conflict in the family of husband, advising to remarry and their suicide.
First, the real affair of Hyangrang's story and how the affair is accepted and transfigured in Sanyuhwayoga is mentioned and the meaning is suggested. Next, the descriptive context of Gongjakdongnambi is devided into four parts and the meaning is studied. This comparing of two works stands on the basis of Sihn, you-han's opinion in the introduction of Sanyouhwagok(山有花曲) that Sanyuhwayoga by Choi, seong-dai is set inside and outside relation with Gongjakdongnambi.
On the background of two works, there are some points of sameness in the process, which real affair happens, the affair is spread by word of mouth, the story is created and sung by people and refined work is made by poet
There are similarities which heroines are poor with a widowed mother and a widower father, hence, they are unhappily married and they are driven out of husband's house and commit suicide. In Sanyuhwayoga the husband thinks Hyangrang bad wife and drives her away with abuse, on the other hand in Gongjakdongnambi the mother-in-law thinks that she is unproductive, impolit drives her daughter-in-law back. This is related to instinctive ostracism against daughter-in-law which is caused by reverse oedipus complex. The father-in-law in Sanyouhwayoga and the husband in Gongjakdongnambi appear as a person who detain and check the antagonist. But their roles are so insignificant that the heroine is driven out of her husband's house after all.
The heroine who comes back home from her husband's house has a feud with her family because they advise her to remarry. The insistent recomandation to remarry by Hyangrlang's uncle and You, ran-jee's brother is natural for the heroines' ordinary happiness. But the heroines reject to remarry and commit suicide. Hyangrlang rejects to remarry and kills herself by her own free will even though she adapts the social ethic and common idea 'yolyobulgyongyeebu'(烈女不更二夫:A woman of virture marries but once) recklessly. On the other hand, You, ran-jee rejects to remarry and commits suicide to preserve chastity and love to her husband as an inevitable choice. Therefore after suicide she comes back to life as Yonliji (連理枝) and Wonang(鴛鴦). It is a reflection of wish to achieve her love through the changing herself.
  In short, Hyangrang(香娘) and Youranji(劉蘭芝) both commit suicide by drowning. But Hyangrang' suicide is for chaste reputation, a social virture of the day, however Youranji commits suicide to keep their love and fidelity between husband and wife. There is the difference of the recognition of Yol between two works in this point.
