Creations of new designs build on various styles of costume that have emerged throughout the human history. As such, the task to study and analyze fashion styles in a specific era is a process and requirement that is essential to creation of fashion.
Beyond the notion that costume is one of historical modes in a specific era, this study aims to compare the characteristics of post-modern costume out of modern costumes and the costume in the neoclassicism era which is recently gaining recognition as a fashion trend, and to identify the association between them.
As a result of examining the aesthetic characteristics of the post-modern costume and the costume in neoclassicism era, the association between them is identified as follows:
The first factor is reactionism. It satirically and metaphorically expresses nostalgia and emotion toward the ancient times so as to be appropriate to the emotion and sense of modern individuals. It provides newness and pleasure to the lost mental world by looking back to the past.
The second factor is combination, wherein clothes contain rich colors, patterns, and materials through contrast and fusion.
The third factor is naturalism, which provides natural expression without reducing or expanding human bodies and as they are.
The fourth factor is human beauty, wherein human body is positively expressed by overdrawing or exposing sexual areas.
As neoclassicism emerged in the post-modern society, it did not only adhere to imitating classical styles, but also incorporated and modified new styles into new expressions appropriate to given situations and the preferences of the public. This trend has served a part of the costume in the post-modern society. In summary, it is considered that the aesthetic characteristics of neoclassicism covered yearning for the Greek humanism that depicted the lines of human body as they were, deviated from artificial and mechanical touch in modernized civilization, naturalism that values human body and is directed to simplicity, and purism.
