This paper examines the dialectic relationship between race and space, manifested in August Wilson's Fences as a way of rewriting African-American history. Drawing on the Foucauldian notion of spaciality as a socially constructed concept of space, I argue that it is possible to analyze the production of space and African Americans' response to it in terms of race, power/knowledge, and spatial geography.
The politics of racial difference aims to perpetuate the spatial distance for discrimination?geographic, economic, and cultural?between blacks and whites. In the preface of Fences, Wilson traces the genealogy of racism which has produced these particular racial and spatial divisions. Although racial difference is arbitrarily fashioned, it plays an important role in practically or imaginarily confining African Americans within whites' concept of space, especially exemplified in the housing district, jobs, and images of the play.
Showing how such a spatial concept is of political importance in perpetuating racial distance, I conclude with an analysis of the way in which African Americans try to transgress what is considered to be legitimate. Though polyphonic in the method of black liberation, Fences is essentially involved in "talking back" to the whites' concept of space with a critical revision of American history by recalling the distorted and the forgotten.
