In 1991 he opened The Ride Down Mt. Morgan in London, a choice in part determined by the director's availability but in part by a deepening despair over Broadway's decline and in particular the determining power of money. The Ride Down Mt. Morgan concerns a man, Lyman Felt, who crashes in a snow storm while driving down a mountainside. Two women rush to his hospital bedside, both believing themselves to be his wife. In fact, he has been bigamony married for nine years, using the same name but maintaining two quite distinct personalities. The two sides of Lyman's character, poetic and materialistic, idealistic and pragmatic, reflect a similar division between the brothers in Death of a Salesman. Miller insists that Lyman is "the quintessential Eighties Man, the man who has everything, but there's no end to his appetite."He also insists that The Ride Down Mt. Morgan is basically about the problem of sincerity. He claims Lyman is the apotheosis of the individualist who has arrived at a point where the rest of the world faded into insignificance. Lyman's ride down Mount Morgan and its afterhours in the hospital may be read to justify himself. Hence he spends his hospital time attempting to present and to justify the self he has performed.
Like Death of a Salesman this play is a drama about a self-delusion. Miller's central preoccupation is existential. He has been preoccupied with the role the individual plays in his own fate. Those who believed in the system felt guilty for their failure and gave up the struggle. The secret of survival seemed to lie in the discovery of the hidden laws. In the pursuit of the discovery the greatest obstacle was not the absence of facts, but the wilful blindness that rendered many people incapable of seeing those facts. We have to fear that we may be as self-deceiving as Lyman Felt or Willy Loman and hope that we can, if we so decide, take control of our lives.
