This paper examines the Narcissus motif in The Importance of Being Earnest in terms of writing and individualism. In the study of the Narcissus motif in The Importance of Being Earnest, Brenkman's postmodern interpretation of the Narcissus and Echo myth in Ovid's Metamorphosis is borrowed. Brenkmen's postmodern reading of the Narcissus and Echo myth is closely related to Derrida's concept of writing and Lacan's concept of subjectivity.
'Narcissus and Echo: Jack-Ernest and Algernon-Bunbury' focuses on the relationship of Jack-Ernest and Algernon-Bunbury. Before their relationship is explored, it is necessary to define what Ernest is to Jack and Algy. Even though, on the whole, Ernest by nature is free and can't be defined as a signifier, in the first act Ernest is defined as 'self-idealized vision' of Jack. Algernon who is the double of Jack, the narcissist contributes to define Ernest as the 'self-idealized vision' of Jack. In the first act of play, as both of them are still in imaginary phase, both are concerned mostly about eating. They fight each other over bread and cake.
'The world of Play: Signifier over Signified' studies the leading female characters, including all the other characters except Jack and Algernon, from the stand point of 'play.'Ernest plays as important a role to Cecily and Gwendolen as to Jack and Algernon. However, Ernest is not a 'the self-idealized vision' to Cecily and Gwendolen but an object of 'play.' This play often takes form of 'writing.'Both Cecily and Gwendolen fall in love with Ernest. However, they do not fall in love with the man Ernest. In the case of Cecily, Ernest just lives in her diary and her love letters. She doesn't love the man Ernest but loves to write the fact that she loves Ernest. In the case of Gwendolen, she doesn't love the man Ernest but just the name of Ernest. Her concern is just the convention of love not love itself. In brief, to Cecily and Gwendolen, the form, the manner, the convention is everything. They just play with the form. Such a way of life causes Jack and Algernon to get out of Ernest as their idealized vision and make Ernest just a word, significant of just itself, with no meaning beyond its palpability as a signifier.
'From Narcissism to Postmodern writing' deals with the transition from Ernest as a self-idealized vision to Ernest as just a word, significant of just itself, with no meaning beyond its palpability as a signifier. Jack-Ernest not only becomes free from any social pressure but also has an opportunity to develop himself fully. In conclusion, Jack-Ernest and other characters to some extent are given an opportunity to develop as individuals in joy, in freedom, in full growth through writing, just like Wilde.
