Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest(1894) represents the characteristics of the Victorian age such as respectability. In this age, male characters are inclined to adopt dandyism as well. What is interesting is Jack Worthing and Algernon lead double lives respectively. Jack pretends to meet his younger brother named Earnest and Algernon uses a non-real friend called Bunbury to escape cramping reality whenever he wants to.
The important crisis which male characters face is that they should have some name like E(a)rnest if they hope to marry. Their would-be wives force the male characters to have the name for their Mr. Right. Thus Jack and Algernon struggle to earn the name to succeed in getting married to their women. Fortunately, in the long run it is revealed that they are originally brothers and it can be possible to have the name E(a)rnest because it was their father’s baptised name. Therefore, having the name, E(a)rnest, they can be husband-to-be to Gwendolen and Cecily.
Taking the schematic problem of a peculiar name into consideration, this paper investigates the aspects of wordplay with a view to rhetorical perspectives. In particular, various characters’ names have possibility to be accrued in line with wordplay. This explanation draws a kind of translation of a variety of names into wordplay as rhetorical translation in view of George Steiner. In this respect, the meaning of E(a)rnest through rhetorical analysis accumulates importance of searching identities. Therefore, from the standpoint of rhetorical perspectives, wordplay represented in their names can be translated in order to explore subversion of the social values in the Victorian age and the process is closely related to the way to seek for their identities.
