1. Introduction
Since the cultural events in 1994 which were held in commemoration of Seoul's 600th anniversary as the capital of Korea, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has made efforts to develop and organize various traditional cultural events that can attract tourists from Korea and abroad. Currently, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is holding a traditional ceremony called the 'Royal Guards Changing Ceremony' every day except Mondays at 2 pm for 90 minutes from March to December at two Joseon dynasty palaces - Changdeokgung palace and Deoksugung palace.
2. Creating a paradigm
In Korea, traditional events have become common since the 1988 Seoul olympics. Since the olympics, Koreans realized the importance of traditional Korean culture and recovered a sense of pride in the nation's traditional culture. In addition, with the implementation of the local autonomous government system in 1995, local cities made efforts to improve the citizens' quality of life, boost the local economy, and preserve and develop traditional culture. As a result, festivals organized by local cities have become well known overseas, and have played a big role in raising the profile of local cities and boosting the local economy.
3. About the 'Royal Guards Changing Ceremony'
In the past, the royal palace where the king resided was called 'Geumnae', or 'Geumgung', meaning 'forbidden palace' because ordinary people were not allowed inside the palace. Soldiers who patrolled and guarded the palace were called 'Geumgun'.
The alignment of the Geumgun guarding the palace gate was called 'Siwi' or 'Suwi'. The palace gate was guarded by 30 soldiers of the Palace Guards' Office, which was located right next to the palace gate. Under the command of the Chamha(military officer in charge of the guards) and the chief of the guards, the soldiers guarded the palace gates and patrolled the palace and its outer walls.
4. The significance of the Royal Guards Changing Ceremony
The Royal Guards Changing Ceremony organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government has been selected as the most popular traditional ceremony by foreign tourists to Korea. The ceremony has contributed in raising Seoul's profile, and is a popular tourist attraction attracting around 500,000 tourists from Korea and abroad every year.
Therefore, traditional culture is a valuable resource of the cultural industry which can create immense value when appropriately utilized.
