The purpose of this study is to examine demographic and socio-economic characteristics of future generations of overseas Koreans, their ethnic identity and attitudes toward their mother country, and plans to help them grow as model citizens of their host countries while maintaining Korean identity and attachment to the mother country. The ultimate goal of this study is to investigate the state of future generations of overseas Koreans around the world, but due to time and monetary constraints I focus on Koreans Americans in this article.
The main research method is in-depth interviews with 29 Korean Americans who are 1.5 or 2nd generation living in four U.S. cities. I interviewed these informants in February, 2005 by using a structured interviewed schedule and recorded and later transcribed the conversation
verbatim for qualitative analyses. The main topics of inquiry include friendship, dating and marriage, parent-children relationship, ethnic identity, language use, religion and church activities, education and employment, and relations with the mother country.
The main findings are as follows. First, as 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean Americans grow older (after entering high schools or colleges), their friendship tends to move from the American-centered one to the Korean-American-centered one. Ethnicity plays important roles in friendship, dating, and marriage. Korean Americans prefer strongly fellow Korean Americans as their future spouses. Second, the ethnic identity of Korean Americans is dual identity that embraces both Korean and American identities. The relationship between Korean and American identities is best understood as the orbit of an individual who circles around two cores of Korean and American identities. When he/she is in a situation where the Korean identity is more relevant, his/her Korean identity becomes more salient but he/she never lose the link to his/her American identity. Third, among 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean Americans, there are significant individual variations in Korean language proficiency, language use patterns, friendship, and Korean ethnic identity and attachment. Initially small differences in those areas in a person's childhood tend to amplify as he/she grows and expands his/her interpersonal networks and knowledge bases. The so-called butterfly effect can be applied to the case of Korean Americans, emphasizing the importance of early education and socialization that fosters among young Korean Americans familiarity with and favorable impression about Korean language and culture. Thus, the Korean government needs to expand and diversify Korean language and culture education for future generation-Korean Americans to cultivate their Korean identity and embrace them in the global Korean community.
