AIDS has been one of the hot issues all over the world since the middle of the 1980’s. It has permanently changed the way people associate with each other, especially the way they make sexual partners. In the beginning of the AIDS epidemic many people believed that homosexuality and drug use were the main cause of the disease, and therefore gays and drug users deserved to be discriminated, or segregated from the main society. Although it has been proved that not only male homosexuals and IV drug users but also heterosexual people who never do drugs can test HIV positive, gays and AIDS patients have long been treated like criminals or patients of a highly contagiopus disease who may contaminate, or infect the other members of the community. AIDS has often been called the modern plague, and people regarded the gay and AIDS patients almost as lepers. AIDS surely is a deadly disease but what is more important is the fragmentation of the social unity caused by the rampant fear of the disease. The American people have paid increasing attention to the issue since they realized that AIDS is a problem for every one to participate in and cooperate to solve. AIDS activists began to speak out for themselves and those who were suffering. Their first objective was to change the mind of the general public towards AIDS. They organized marches and held conventions. Plays have been written and performed.
Teaching plays with gay and AIDS themes at American universities began in the beginning of the 1990’s. Gay and AIDS dramas is rarely, if ever, taught at Korean universities. Sexuality belongs in the realm of privacy, and sexual orientation is something that is quite embarrassing to discuss in public. But the appearance of AIDS has demanded an open discussion and checkup of our sexual consciousness and sexual behavior. It has become imperative for students as well as people outside the campus to think about and discuss this issue. In dealing with the themes of gay and AIDS in modern drama the instructor may face with several problems. In As Is Hoffman does not modify the language of real life homosexuals into something digestible for the main stream audience, or hide things that could be morally reprehensible in the eye of the characters. He shows as many things from real life as possible “as is”. The instructor may experience difficulties in explaining things from the text. There are things such as unconventional language, promiscuity, drug use, excessive curiosity and attention on the lifestyle and the body of gays and AIDS patients. The instructor ought to prepare for each and every class carefully so that the class may not get out of control and go in a direction other than initially planned. He or she should also be prepared to take whatever questions from the students. It may take a while for the students to become used to the environment of discussing these topics. The instructor may want to show the students videos that deal with homosexuality and AIDS. The Wedding Banquet, The Crying Game, Birdcage, Priest, Longtime Companion, And the Band Played On are some of the good ones. An in-class talk with a gay man, an AIDS patient, or a hospice worker, if available, will be a good chance to experience the issues more directly.
