This paper looks into how reunification is expressed in 'Minjung-Gayo' between 1996 and 2000. There is a data of 1,800 'Minjung-Gayo' that were collected and analyzed and when using this data I placed my focus on 174songs that dealt with reunification. Reunification was a primary theme in 154 songs and was a secondary theme in 20 songs. I wanted to reveal how reunification expressed in these songs changed over the years.
'Minjung-Gayo' about reunifications can be divided into five categories. First type of songs insists on reunification without mentioning a dear reason. Second type of songs says that reunification truly liberates people and is a condition for reconciliation and peace which will bring prosperity. In third type of songs, foreign powers and the us are considered as stumbling blocks to reunification. Such songs stress alternity in reunification. Fourth type of songs sings about furure of reunified Korea. Fifth type of songs is other songs such as North Korean popular songs. North Korean popular songs in particular are unique in that they are sung during protests even though they are not exactly student activists' songs. North Korea naturally comes to mind when envisaging or preparing for reunification and 'Minjung-Gayo' contain a mature sense of reunification in that they naturally embrace North Korean songs and bring North Korea to our daily lives. 'Minjung-Gayo' are positive about current process towards teunification and paint a rosy outlook for reunification. This is clearly shown in the changing melodies of 'Minjung-Gayo' ; in the past, songs mostly used minor keys which give dark and solemn feeling but nowadays major keys are used to give uplifting and bright feeling. This change also attests that reunification, once considered as a distant future, is now starting to unfold in front of our eyes. This reunification is not associated with dark images such as competition between different regimes, war, confusion and insecurity but portrayed as bright and joyful event. Reunification is a reality but at the same time it would be a reality that is very confusing and dizzying. Amid this confusion, bright outlook may seem irresponsible but let's just say current 'Minjung-Gayo' are being faithful to theit role which is presenting better futute to the people.
