Tennyson is well known for his religious conflict in the midst of Darwinism and other scientific theories. The purpose of this essay is to show that his poems, especially The Idylls of the King and Maud, are not just the result of religious conflict but the beginning of existentialism. To define existentialism briefly, it means that individual existence precedes essence in reality, not the other way around. Thus, it is absurd to try to follow essence like universal moral or religious doctrines, which is almost impossible. This idea underlies the literary works of modern existentialism written by Sartre or Beckett.
The king Arthur in The Idylls of the King symbolizes essence. He is a king chosen by God, and an embodiment of supreme moral. His knights seeks to find the Holy Grail, a symbolic image of essence, but in vain. All the knights in pursuit of the Grail found that it is impossible, seeming to realize that essence cannot precede existence. In “The Passing of Arthur” the king becomes helpless and can do nothing to Bedievere's asking for help. The narrator in Maud lives in the absurd society and does not know which is the right way to lead his life. For him, essence is not an option that he can afford to achieve and finally he decides to participate in a war, which probably will get him killed. This is the kind of circumstance that we can often find in modern existential literature of the twentieth century.
