In the Nineteenth-century, most girls of the upper-middle class had to marry because except for marriage, they are not allowed decent social and economic status. Women as men's possessions and/or ornaments were assumed to consider marriage as the sole object in life. In the male-dominated capitalist society, marriageable women were utterly dependent upon men and in essence sold themselves as much as prostitutes did.
Undine Spragg in The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton is an extremely capable and unscrupulously ambitious woman who fully understood woman's place in the society. Since woman's status was conferred by marriage, Undine reasoned that it only made sense to work marriage as a business, and maximize profit. With the energy of the free enterprise system, Undine married four times. During the process, she used and wasted men. Edith Wharton severely criticized the male-dominated pecuniary society by demonstrating a furiously self-centered and greedy woman who took chances in life by means of marriage. The Custom of the Country can be said to be a powerful denunciation of patriarchal commercial society.
