Japanese companies' cross stock holding system came to confront difficulties unexpectedly. The cross stock holding system has been the most distinctive feature in Japanese companies. In the 1980s Japanese economy was in a favorable condition, so that the cross stock holding system was evaluated positive. However, due to the long-term depression, collapse of the so-called 'bubble economy' and the stock market, financial institutions' bad loan crisis, economic conflicts with the United States, series of corporate management scandals and etc. the cross stock holding system came to be reconsidered. In fact, for the past several years some badly managed companies started to sell their mutually held stocks. In addition, recent series of M & A of large banks seems to accelerate these trends.
A few years ago, foreign investors' purchasing of the released mutually held stocks supported the stock market, so stock market prices even went up. Yet, at the beginning of 2001, the stock market started to fall down with the absent of buyers. Recently, it is a serious problem how to deal with the released stocks. Meanwhile, according to the new company accounting standard, it has been mandatory to assess the mutually held stocks based on market price since March 2002. So the stockholders, especially banks, would face heavier losses than assets if the stock prices keep going down. Thus, it seems inevitable for companies to release the stocks in dealing with this problem.
Therefore, through analyzing these trends in Japanese companies, this study aims to examine some lessons to Korean companies, which have similar economic conditions, corporate governance, and stock holding system with Japan.
