This study is intended to widen our understanding about the experience of becoming and being homeless, based on the premise that homelessness is a complex phenomena involving multiple types and layers of losses. Core question dealt with in this study is as follows: What's the experience of losing home and being homeless? For in-depth understanding, this study analyzed the meaning of home and homelessness in terms of physical, psychological, economic, and sociocultural aspects.
Regarding of physical aspects of home, homelessness is the loss of safety, health, hygiene, relaxation, efficiency, privacy, and personality. With regard to psychological meaning of home, the homeless are people living always threatened with the loss of rest, hearth, tie and interaction with others, and sense of one's root. From the economic aspects of home, homelessness mirrors loss of ownership, economic independence, and natural flow of production and consumption of labor energy, which makes many homeless people isolated from society. Homelessness as sociocultural entity represents deviation from mainstream value and order. And, there is sex difference in experiencing homelessness.
