History and novel are similar in the viewpoint of narrative. There are four types of historical narrative ; Imaginative narrative, factual narrative, imaginative record and factual record. The former two are narratives of novel, while the two are narratives of history. Narrative style of history and novel seems to be the same, but the two narratives are different. Based on the imagination, the novel writer makes his own narrative as a fiction. On the other hand, the historiographer records their own narrative as a non-fiction.
There is a reversal of description between the two narratives sometimes. For instance, the historical novel writer describes object more factually than the historiographer. Historiographer also describes more imaginatively than the novel writer.
Since the Chosun Dynasty was established on the rules of Confucianism, the historiographer must record objects on the viewpoint of Confucian ideology. In this reason, the historiographer depicts some events and figures under the Confucian ideology. The Confucianism viewpoint of historiography lets the historiographer describe some of its figures unrealistically.
As one of the historical novel writers, Myung-Hee HONG focused on the lowest person, LIM Guk-Jung, who was a slaughter and turned into a rebellious leader. Even though writer HONG was of the highest class, he depicted the feudal society as a contradicting one. Under the colonial modernization, he also depicted the whole nation as an organic apparatus as well as an imagined community.
The reason why Myung-Hee HONG described all the spaces of Korea was his writing strategy towards nation-state. Under the Japanese imperialism, Korea didn't have any vision of an independent nation. Since Korean couldn't figure out the nation-state, he suggested the imagined community as a nation through the historical novel.
