Solar Cookers can provide a number of benefits to the society including a cleaner environment. There is a considerable interest in box solar cookers in India. Studies (Mullick,1987) on thermal performance of the box solar cooker have resulted in the Indian Standards on solar cookers (Mullick,1991).
Two figure of merit were proposed to quantify thermal performance of box solar cookers. These figures were derived by accounting for the variables so that the parameters refer more to the cooker and are less dependent on the climate. The second Figure of Merit, F₂, takes care of(F´no CR). It is obtained from the water-heating test using the experimental data on water temperature (Tw) and the climatic variables I and Ta. It takes into account the climatic variables through a dimensional group consisting of [(T w- Ta)/I]. It was shown that F₂can be obtained by using an equation involving natural logarithm of a function with this dimensional group.
An approximate simplified expression for F₂has been developed and is proposed for the analysis of experimental data. The values of F₂obtained from the proposed expression are within 3.2% deviation of the values obtained by the original expression.
