Gaebyeok/開闢(The Awakening) was a prominent figure in the history of Korean magazines. In one of the Koreans' darkest periods in history, the Japanese occupation period, Gaebyeok continued to be published for 6 consecutive years without interruptions, and did not miss a single issue. In average, 8,000 copies of the magazine were sold, and sometimes the number even hit 10 thousand.
In this article, all those 72 copies of Gaebyeok, which began its publication with the June 25th 1920 issue and ended with the August 1926 issue, are examined. Through such examination, we shall see that Gaebyeok was able to rise into being a highly successful magazine for the Korean people because of its nature of prioritizing national and public issues above anything else, and also because of its own open nature in terms of actual editing. Also, the fact that Gaebyeok managed to offer a logical basis for construing the real nature of the Joseon situation, bringing a critical spin to those conditions, and also abolishing national and social class-based barriers at the same time, thus earning itself a unique position in historical terms, will be examined as well.
