This paper intends to study the case of the nazi hero 'Horst Wessel'. In the 1920s and 1930s, the heroism were a dominated ideology in German society. Especially germans, who were defeated in the first world war, waited eagerly the appearance of heros as saviors of the nation. The National Socialists succeeded in marrying the German idea of heroism to the national state.
Before the seizure of power, the young National Socialist movement demonstrated that blood shed for the nation was redemptive. The heroic mythology became the battle cry of the Nazis in the Kampfzeit(period of struggle). Horst Wessel was a legendary martyr for the early nazi movement. Wessel's death in the battle against the Bolsheviks offered Goebbels the opportunity he needed to give graphic form to the saga of the fighting, dying SA(Strum Abteilung) hero. A ‘made' new myth was born, and the name Horst Wessel became synonymous with german heroism.
In the peacetime years of nazi regime, the myth of Horst Wessel was systematically cultivated by the Propaganda Machinery of Goebbels. The place where Wessel lived and worked became Stations of the Cross. The symbol of Horst Wessel remained a magnet for Nazi mass propaganda, which embraced all of the arts and the methods. During World War II, the spirit of Horst Wessel was conjured up from time to time with the hope of bracing the entire country for glorious victory. For the Nazis, Horst Wessel remained what he had always been: a holly hero of bravery and self-sacrifice.
