This paper is to describe the achievements and to reveal the tasks of the Korean semantic researches on the occasion of the 1945 Liberation. The results are as follows:
The achievements of semantics can be divided into the following three fields. First, the main stream of semantic researches was studied starting 1957, and the Korean semantics has made very remarkable achievements both in quality and quantity since then. Second, the aspects of introduction of general semantic theories into Korean semantics were explored, and structural semantics was most remarkable and after it cognitive semantics among them. Third, as for the researches of semantic levels, lexical semantics was most actively studied among lexical semantics, sentential semantics, and utterance semantics.
Next, the tasks of the Korean semantic researches are as follows: First, the purpose of semantic researches has to contribute to explaining the human nature and it also must have practicality. Second, the objects of semantic studies have to include the analyses of human problems and practical purposes. Third, the methods of semantic studies have to be in harmony with the purposes and objects of researches.
Third, in order to do the tasks: (1) Cognitive linguistics needs to be studied more deeply. (2) Interdisciplinary researches and the bottom-up methods in collecting and processing the data are required. (3) The more introduction of general semantics into Korean semantic researches is needed and vice versa.
In brief, Korean semantics has developed greatly. Now our tasks are to set the future-oriented purposes, to find the valuable objects of researches, and to develop the methodology of higher explanatory power.
