In this paper, we derive the phenomenological nonlinear gain fomula in semiconductor lasers using dynamic dielectric grating theory. From the Mawell's equations we uses the fact that stimulated emission induces a dielectric perturbation through the process of either spectral-hole burning, hot carriers, carrier density, or other effects. For simplicity we assume that only one physical process is dominant. We also assume that the effect of mode coupling is the result of dielectric perturbation induced by stimulated emission. As a result we obtain the phenomenological nonlinear gain formula, ε_(??)=β(1+ατ(ω_?-ω_?)/1+[(ω_?-ω_?)τ]²), from the rate equation describing the photon density.
