The experiential story of Japanese invasion of Korean in 1592 was encapsulated in the form of non-fiction literature. A documentary account of the war refers to the written report of the war experience, written by the person who served in the war. 『Jungman-Rok』 by Tak-young Lee and 『Chosun-ililki』 by Keinen are among the non-fiction literature about the conflict between Korea and Japan can be categorized as war written documentaries. Through the comparison between the two literary works, it is also possible to compare specifically how the aspects of the war were mirrored in the work and what the writer’s spirit was.
First, the two writings documented the ravaged realities of war. The writers depicted realistically stacked bodies here and there, burning villages, famine, suffering from diseases, and family separation. They also intended to portray the evil of war by the detailed descriptions. However, there are differences in their purposes of writing between 『Jungman-Rok』 and 『Chosun-ililki』. Tak-young Lee showed wrath toward Japanese invaders, while Keinen self-reflected on the horrors of war. It is based on the situation and social status with which the writers were afflicted.
A feeling of nostalgia was embedded in their writings. The two writers participated in the war in order to serve a superior officer. One of the greatest sufferings was family separation during the long camp life. The homesickness was manifested in their dreams. The joy of encountering family members and the disappointment and shedding of tears endlessly when they woke from their dreams provided reflection that the people suffered greatly from the war. It is also evidence that the nostalgia was pervaded in the two writings. Each writer of the works highlighted the nostalgia because both of them opposed the war, and they wanted to establish peace.
