The salons of Paris in the seventeenth century were open, substituting traditional aristocratic values that worshiped heroism and violence with refined values called honntete. In terms of society, honntete was more than acts needed in social activities, and was 'l'art de plaire', 'bienseance', 'just milieu' and conformite. These concepts and norms of honntete were naturally acquired in the middle of meeting and imitating honnete gen in salons.
Women in salons educated honntete gen by promoting fined atmosphere with sophisticated manners, elegant ways of talking, literary tastes, and so on. The roles of these women provided them with work outside of housework and justified women's social activities.
However, among women in salons, precieuses had preciosite to be differentiated from others and violated norms of honnetete, showing exaggeration and ostensible decoration. These appearances were considered resistance against the established system and intention to conquer the male domination by antifeminists in the seventeenth century, who asserted that these kinds of women had to be expelled from public sphere. After that, since women in salons were afraid of derision and expulsion, they were forced to act only according to the traditional norms that were endowed to women keeping the values of honnetete.
