The ship model navigation test is a new kind of physical model test. Such test method of the overlapping departments has been developed based on the river engineering model and ship model test. This paper gives detailed exposition about the basic similaritive conditions and the technique relative to ship model navigation test and its development, points out that this comprehensive technique is suitable for studing the problems of the navigational hydraulic conditions and the most advantage construction layout in all kinds of navigational projects, and for studing the Interaction of the ship property and channel scale and flow conditions, the measure for improving the navigation capacity. Also in this paper, it is presented that the use of the technique above - mentioned for studing the problems in port and channel engineering and in bridge navigation, and the prospects for its development.
