In the process of ongoing globalization, diverse issues of the debates over it are emerging. One of the most important issues is its historical trajectory. There are diverse arguments, which sketch its different trajectories. This study, however, mainly focuses on "contemporary globalization," which has rapidly advanced since 1980s. It is because this study considers contemporary globalization as historical transformation - the disturbance of national societies - especially in relation to its velocity, width and depth, and its impact on the terrain of perception.
Some argue that contemporary globalization means the advent of the global age, global civilization, and global capitalism. However, they fail to notice that contemporary globalization is advanced very unevenly, and cannot make "an integrated world," despite of its tendency of making a unified world. Therefore, this study argues that contemporary globalization is multidimensional phenomena, and includes not only the process of integration bur also that of diversification and fragmentation. Contemporary globalizarion is conceptualized, on the one hand, in terms of structure or process; on the other hand, in terms of strategy or project. In terms of strategy or project, contemporary globalization significantly means neoliberal globalization, westerniztion, and Americanization.
Contemporary globalizarion is also multi-scalar phenomena because it refers to deterritorialization and reterritorialization in the increasing global flows and mobilities. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze diverse scales, such as global, region and local. It is important to emphasize that the analysis of national scale is still worthwhile because national states are still the most important institution in political and economic dimensions, and the core scale of reterritorialization.
Finally, the needs of the new political forms are raised, as contemporary globalization has been proceeded. The modern political forms, which have been existed as the national state and inter-national state system, are no longer fir in with contemporary globalization. Thus, the management of globalization process, especially its negative effects, is required. If globalizarion is proceeded without any proper political coordination, it could mean the new barbarism and danger.
