This article deals with the issue of 'sympathy' of Korean literature in the 1920s investigating Kim Dong-in's short stories. Whereas the previous researches have focused on the exclusiveness of Kim. Dong-in's aestheticism, this article attempts to show synthetic aspects of aesthetic and moral elements in his short stories. According to sociology of sentiments, most of human sentiments including sympathy are closely related to specific social as well as historical conditions. In the 1920s, 'sympathy' came out to be one of the most important terminologies reflecting public sentiments. With this view, Kim Dong-in's short stories are representing and inventing the issue of sympathy in this period.
The body of this article is divided into three chapters. ChapterⅡ investigates the relationships between sympathy and social identity - especially male characters' homo erotic tension - analysing Kim Dong-in's shore stories. Chapter
Ⅲ deals with how the sympathetic narrators who are struggling against modem journalism effect the narrative of his short stories. Chapter Ⅳ examines the doubleness of sympathy caused by its theatricalness. In short, Kim Dong-In's short stories symbolize dramatic association between moral sentiment and aesthetic orientation.
