Around 1900, the evolution theory played a problematic role in east Asia. In origin, evolution theory was invented as a scientific theory by Darwin, but at once was expanded to a social theory by Spencer and other socialogists, and was summarized in the pharases like 'The weak fall a prey to the strong.' 'Only the fittest can survive.' when it was introduced to east Asia. Evolution theory as such was antipodal to the east Asian tradition that there is an immovable moral, then it was to stimulate the reorganization of traditional thinking.
However. when we take the case of Korea as an example, we can find out that the phrases like 'The weak fall a prey to the strong.' or 'Only the fittest can survive.' was not easily appopriated. They was to undergo resistance from many directions, and such a situation still holds its truth. The first possibility of the resistance was that of traditional thinking, but it took little attention. The second resistance was the emphasis on the function of a law. Modern law in national and international order both, was interpreted as a protection of the weak from the strong, and represented as a new possibility of a reward in accordance with a deed. The source of third resistance was Christianity. Christianity was apprpriated as a basis of westernization, but at the same time was understood as an ideal of mutual dependence and peace. An Guk-seon's <Animals' Conference[Geum-su-heo-eu -rok] > and Kim pil-soo's <Awakening [Gyoung-se-jong] > show the examples of an ambivalent role of Christianaty at the level of novelistic discourse.
