This thesis is about the changes in Lee Ho-Cheol's novels. Lee's novels show the tension between two telated dimensions: the romantic world and the real world. The romantic world of Lee's novels is rooted in his hometown from which, he was forcibly removed by the Korean War. The hometown as a small community, which was bound by humanity, is the fundamental reference point of the author's worldly experiences. However, he is acutely aware that this world of his hometown now belongs to the past. Lee also admits that his only contact with the real world is the city of Busan into which he was thrown as a refugee, and which represents modern everyday life in his novels. The world of his hometown takes on a romantic value. In other words, the hometown is romanticised. This thesis examines just how this world of hometown changed from Lee's early novels to his 70s' novels. Whilst his 50s' novels still portray his hometown as a real place, in his 60s' novels his hometown takes on more and mote of a romantic and lyrical value. In the 70s the romantic world called hometown sheds its lyrical passivity and embraces an ideological content that judges and criticises reality. Of course, this world of hometown shares characteristics with the contrasting real world. This thesis analyses the tense and changing relationship that exists between the romantic world and the real world in Lee's novels from the first one, "Talhyang" (leaving hometown) to "Keunsan" (big mountain) written In the 70s.
