The short novel writing has a long history in the Chinese literature history, but it did not establish its position until Ming Dynasty. The prosperity of the “speaking” short novels in the Ming Dynasty is of various significances, but the most important is the related cultural factors. Firstly, the civilian culture appeared in the Ming Dynasty greatly pushed the prosperity of the short novel. With the development of the handcraft industry and business, the civilian class had become an important part in the society. Based on its special social foundation and historical background, this new class even formed its own cultural psychology. This psychology required the literature to be earthliness, conciliation and entertainment. In satisfying these requirements, the “speaking” short novels became prosperity in the Ming Dynasty. Secondly, The prosperity of the “speaking” short novels in the Ming Dynasty was closely related to the adjustment of the cultural conceptions in the Chinese literature. Since the beginning of the Chinese literature, it was divided into classical literature and popular literature. However, while the classical literature occupying the legitimacy position, the popular literature was looked down upon as the inferior part. The prosperity of the short novels in the Ming Dynasty also changed this situation and won the equal position for the popular literature. Thirdly, the prosperity of the speaking short novels also broke the tradition between history and literature in the Chinese culture. In the Chinese traditional culture, the “historical legitimacy” had been over the literature for many years. It stipulated that the history was only for the kings and aristocrats and the literature was the way to express the history. With the attention to be focused on the low level of the society, the short novels changed the content of the literature and separated literature from history. It is a new way to analysis the prosperity of the short novels through the related cultural factors. The analysis will be helpful to find out the relations between the prosperity of short novels and the cultural factors. And it also will be useful to find out the trace of the development of the Chinese ancient literature.
