Old literature showed that various kinds of wool has been used in Korea from old times, although costume relics of the remote ages do not exist any more. In this study, total 15 pieces of the wool carpets remains of the late Chosun dynasty have been examined, including 11 pieces collected by the Onyang Folk Museum, 3 pieces of the Sookmyung Women's University Museum, and 2 pieces of the personal collection. All the examined wool remains were weaved by tapestry, knotting, and loop-pile weaving.
In the old literature of Korea, there appeared words relevant to wool, which are Kuyu(구유), Tapdeung(탑등), Modam(毛담), and Chun(氈).
Kuyu(구유) and Tapdeung(탑등) refer to carpet weaved by tapestry technique without pile knot. 毛담(Modam) indicate generally carpet or rug and has the same meaning as Kuyu, Yok(褥), Mosuk(毛席) Chun(氈) is same as felt.
Among the examined 10 pieces of the Onyang Folk Museum from relic number 10-1 to 10-10 were weaved by tapestry weaving, which weft cross warp alternatively resulting the pattern made only by weft.
Slit was made by dove-tailing, brick joininng, curving junction, and hatching technique, To decorate the motif. different kinds of weaving technique or colors of the thread were used simultaneously, such that various colors of weft were weaved to make the motif or color were applied on the carpets by single color weft, Persia knot were used in the "Yungdam(絨담) 95" of the Onyang Folk Museum, "Kgalgae 5" of the Sookmyung Women's Umversity Museum, and "Yungdam 7-2" of the personal collections, Loop-pile weaving was found in the "Kgalgae 6" and "Kgalgae 7" of the Sookmyung Women's University Museum, where loop and warp has the same direction.2
