This paper examines the problems of Korean adolescents' exposure to online pornography and suggests solutions from a Christian education perspective. The paper is comprised of three sections: Korean adolescents' exposure to online pornography, biblical and theological critiques of pornography, and solutions through Christian education.
Characteristics of Korean adolescent exposure to cyber pornography were examined in five parts: method of exposure, prevalence of exposure, first exposure, frequency of exposure, and types of exposure. First, adolescents are exposed to cyber pornography in one of three ways: through friends, through online serendipity, or through curiosity. Second, 67.5% of the adolescent respondents viewed pornographic material: by gender, 90.9% of males and 35.7% of females. Interestingly, 51.9% of high achievers, 62.3% of middle achievers, and 86.7% of low achievers had viewed pornography. Third, 57.9% of Korean adolescents were first exposed to pornography in the middle school years. Fourth, more than 60% of the adolescent respondents viewed pornography once a week, while 23% of the adolescents viewed it three times per week. Fifth, three types of exposure to cyber pornography have been found among Korean adolescents: l)online chatting, 2)adult-only sites, and 3)by downloading pornography via file sharing programs, such as P2P or Warez. Four harmful effects of cyber pornography on adolescents were analyzed: l)perverted sex-consciousness, 2)seduction to juvenile prostitution, 3)swapping, and 4)providing a motive for sex crimes.
In biblical and theological critiques of pornography section, three points are made: biblical accounts of human sexuality, biblical precepts and pornography, and Chiristian spirituality and pornography Based on the biblical theological reflection, three resolutions are suggested: diagnosing problems and doctrinal instruction on sin, pedagogy of the decalogue for healing and Christian education for fulfilling human sexuality.
If the problem is not resolved, the next generation may not be capable of maintaining social norms supporting conjugality, marriage, and family values. If proper remedial treatment is not planned by the government, the school, and the church, this issue will remain with us permanently. In order to maintain the social order of marriage and family values, Christian educators are to keep an eye on adolescents' exposure to pornography and suggest doctrinal teachings on sin and holiness, the creation of human sexuality, and the pedagogy of the Decalogue.
