Historians have thus far studied Wonchuek's books, and focused primarily on making a list of the book. Of course, we cannot say that their study is meaningless. However, he should not be considered just as a Buddhist scholar. This is because he translated the Sutras that was imported from India into Chinese. We might say that he has to also be valued as a translator to understand him rightly. Thus, this thesis is aimed at showing his writings and panicipation in translating the Buddhist scriptures. The new findings are as follows: First, I discovered that he was at odds with Gyugi(규기) and always published imponant books ahead of Gyugi. I found that samadhinirmocana-sutra-bhasya(해심밀경소) was brought out during 681 - 690, manusyaindra-sutra-bhasya(인왕경소) after 690. Second, I discovered that he played a major role in translating the Scriptures that was imported from India into Chinese since 679. This thesis showed that he accepted a newly flowed trend of Buddhism as well as an existing one, and this was fully retlected into samadhinirmocana-sutra-bhasya(해심밀경소) and manusyaindra-sutra-bhasya(인왕경소). Third, this thesis revealed that the historical significance of his writings and participation in translation and presented specifically what kinds of the Sutras he translated. I also pointed out that he should be valued not only as a writer but also as a translator in order to understand him precisely.
