In this paper, a new baseband digital demodulator is presented for the demodulation of digital phase and frequency modulation signals such as π/QPSK, GMSK, and multi-level CPFSK signals. The proposed demodulator offers ease of manufacturing, adaptability with fabrication technologies and power supply voltages, and reduction in power consumption, compared to conventional demodulators. This demodulator perfom1s detection by estimating phase rotation angle using the zero-crossings of in-phase and quadrature signals. This demodulator may be entirely implemented digitally for wideband signals. For narrowband signals, which require additional zero-crossing, an eHicient way to create additional zero-crossing is introduced. The demodulator for narrowband signals may be mostly digital except for the generation of additional zero-crossings, which may require simple analog summers.
Also presented is the performance analysis of the proposed ZC demodulator, and verification of this analysis by means of computer simulations for an MSK signal. The ZC demodulator with 4,8, and 16axes is found, for an MSK signal in a static environment, to perform 5dB, 1dB, and 0.3dB worse respectively than the limiter-discriminator with an intergrate-dump filter, when the initial phase condition at each symbol time is evenly distributed.
