Measurements for the growth behavior of GDI spray were performed by laser induced exciplex fluorescence (LIEF) and particle image velocimetry(PIV) techniques. The fuel spray was injected into a constant volume chamber.
For LIEF technique, Dopants used were 2% fluorobenzene and 9% diethylmethylamine (DEMA) in 89% solution of hexane, and the fuel distribution of liquid and vapor phase were obtained in different ambient temperatures and pressures. It was found that ambient pressure had a significant effect on the shape of the spray. In addition, the difference between liquid and vapor phase sprays was found.
To investigate the flow motion of the inside of fuel spray, two frame cross-correlation PIY method was used PIY provides spatially resolved two-dimensional flow velocity maps for fuel spray. As the ambient pressure was higher, the axial growth of spray was less brisk than radial growth. Moreover, the velocity of fuel droplets dissipated rapidly, but the vorticity tended to decay slowly.
