Gasoline properties do not remain constant, but vary from one location to another and from year to year. Some of the recent trends in these pro­perties are in the direction of poorer quality, while others are helping to improve quality.
The increase in average gasoline vapor pressure is a disturbing trend which leads to higher vehicle hydrocarbon emissions and poorer hot weather driveability in many cars.
Sales of gasoline-alcohol blends have increased rapidly since 1980. Certain alcohols such as methanol and ethanol are effective octane improv­ers, but they increase the volatility of the fuel unless the gasoline is reformulated to control volatility. Vehicle driveability and the compati­bility of the fuel with fuel system materials are additional concerns with certain gasoline-alcohol blends. Blends of gasoline with methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) are becoming popular. They provide many of the same benefits as gasoline-alcohol blends, while avoiding some of the disadvan­tages. Blends of gasoline with alcohols or MTBE are being considered by some states as a means of reducing carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles.
The significant reduction in the lead content of leaded gasolines is a welcome trend, because it reduces the emissions of lead into the atmosphere, and it also reduces the damage done to vehicle emissions control systems by misfueling catalyst-equipped cars with leaded gasoline.
The average octane quality of each grade of gasoline has declined slightly during the past ten years, but with the reduction in the use of lead, the total unleaded pool octane quality in the U.S. has increased.
The recent substantial increase in the use of detergent additives has been a big step toward maintaining clean fuel induction systems and ensuring good vehicle performance.
