The Meaning of ‘mot’ is changed by categories combined with it. When it combines with propositions of gradability, the meaning of ‘mot’ is ‘Bulkeup’(不及), i.e. not coming up to the degrees of standard. Gradability is expressed in different way according to lexical categories. For adjectives, gradability is expressed by lexical items itself, but for verbs, by various expressions of gradability, not verbs itself.
Because ‘mot’ of ‘Bulkeup’ is the judgement that predicated objects don’t come up to the standard of speaker’s judgements, the propositions with ‘mot’ are similar to inferior comparatives. In comparatives, the element of comparison relation is placed behind compared objects and comparative standard. Therefore ‘mot’ of ‘Bulkeup’, which is the element of relation between compared objects and comparative standard, is behind the expressions of gradability. Because it is different from lexical categories to express the gradability, ‘mot’ of 'Bulkeup' is post-verbal for adjectives, but post-verbal or pre-verbal for verbs.
Although ‘mot’ of the meaning ‘Bulkeup’ is combined with adjectives of gradability, it is not combined with adjectives of negative meaning. ‘Mot’ is the judgement of comparison, and the standard of comparison is the expectation of speaker. Accordingly the speaker’s expectation of ‘mot’ is the expectation of positive meaning. Since the degree of standard or speaker’s expectation is context-dependent, it is distinct from the polar opposition of adjectives. In addition, ‘mot’ of the meaning ‘Bulkeup’ has a tendency not to be combined with psychological adjectives. It is attributed to the property of the proposition of psychological adjectives. The proposition of psychological adjectives is statement, but the proposition with ‘mot’ of the meaning ‘Bulkeup’ is judgement.
