The purpose of this study was to determine daycare teachers' level of child abuse awareness. Surveys were given to 253 subjects, including student teachers and currently employed daycare teachers in city G. The survey consisted of 78 questions, covering topics that include child abuse basics, education, services, and the importance of reporting child abuse cases. The completed surveys were then analyzed with SPSS Krean 7.5, calculating the average, standard deviation, and frequency. The Scheffe test was used to further analyze the results. The analysis demonstrated that the currently employed teachers had less awareness on child abuse compared to their supervisors and student teachers. Among the subjects only 21.7% had encountered abused children during the past year.
Most of these teachers answered that they have treated the abused children kindly with extra attention(45.9%), while 15.5% admitted to have ignored the situation. Also, 43% were aware of the existence of private institutions that handle child abuse cases, while only 28.5% knew about the Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (CPCAN/1391), a government agency commissioned by recently established child-abuse laws. While the latest measure of awareness of CPCAN(28.5%) was higher than what has been reported in the previous study (Chong Chae-ok, 2002), more than 70% still did not know such an establishment even exists.
Finally, 96.8% expressed interest in educational programs to increase the awareness of child abuse and related matters, including the work done at child abuse prevention centers and educating parents.
