The objectives of this research are to analyze management states of early childhood educational institutions and the appreciation of the importance of management, to identify differences among the management states and the appreciation of the importance of management, and to suggest directions for early childhood educational institutions to improve their management by evaluating the management qualities of the institutions.
The subjects of this research are 230 heads and 371 teachers of early childhood institutions, so 601 people in total. As the tool for the research, a questionnaire, which was drafted based on literatures and adjusted through two times of preliminary interviews and examinations, has been used. To examine management states and appreciation of the importance of management on the whole and in the sub-areas of early childhood educational institutions and to identify the differences among them according to the status of teachers, by the size of institutions, and by the locations of institutions, the two way nested analysis of variance has been made. In addition, t-verification has been performed to identify the differences among the management states and appreciation of the importance of management on the whole and in the sub-areas of early childhood educational institutions.
From the analyses by the method and procedure mentioned above, the following conclusions have been resulted. First, management states of early childhood educational institutions are varying according to the status of teachers, the size of institutions, and the locations of institutions. By the status of personnel, heads of the institutions evaluate the management states more positively than teachers do.
With regard to the size of institutions, the management states of institutions with 3 or more classes appear much better than those with less than 3 classes. In terms of the locations, the management states of institutions in large, middle and small cities appear superior to those in towns and villages. Second, appreciation of the importance of management of early childhood educational institutions has been shown differently according to the status of teachers, the size of institutions, and the locations of institutions. By the status of personnel, teachers appear to appreciate the importance of management more highly than heads do. With regard to the size of institutions, the importance of management appreciated in institutions with 3 or more classes appears higher than that in institutions with less than 3 classes. In terms of the locations, the importance of management is appreciated more highly by institutions in large, middle and small cities than by those in towns and villages. Third, the quality of management states of early childhood educational institutions is evaluated as 'average', and the appreciation of the importance of management 'good', which shows that the states are poorer than the appreciation of the importance of management.
To improve the management states, early childhood educational institutions are required to set visible goals to aim improvement of work environments, efficient communication systems and participative decision-makings, as well as invisible goal to increase awareness of the importance of management.
