Personalization of living space is a fundamental and widespread phenomenon in different cultures. Past research has indicated that
personalization reflects some aspects of the residents' past experience in housing environment. For this purpose, this study aims to explore the range of personalization in living environment through a cross-cultural investigation. With regard to the different cultural backgrounds, the examination is illuminating a way of knowing how people think and feel about the current living spaces and how they control and influence the environment with activities as well as personal expressions. The study found the effect of childhood emotional experience by environmental auto-biography appears to be statistically significant on the personalization of their current living space. However, survey
groups (Korean vs. American students) are likely to have varying degree of emotional levels and therefore, provide different predictors for personalization of space, which means culturally different facilitation of living spaces depending upon their past experience. Regarding the perception of childhood emotional experience, t-test showed statistically significant differences. Factor analysis identified three major components which influence the personalization of space; maintenances, decoration, and attachment to living space. Chi-square test revealed that American students tended to record more intensive levels of the personalization factor. Moreover, stepwise regression analysis also indicated that cultural groups are different in predicting the level of personalization on their current living space. Finally, the investigation of graphs indicates different patterns of personalization on each type of emotional experience. From another standpoint, the research implies that childhood experience functions as an important determinant of a person's emotional experience with residential environments, and therefore, has a significant impact on the personalization of their current living space.
