In this thesis I suggest a hypothesis on early modem korean novel. That hypothesis is there are dual modernity in the nation falling into the colonial state at the door of modernizing. There are two different interpretive community on modernity in that society. The one is continuity, the other is interruption. As is generally known, the former is embodied in the theory of transplant.
The transplant theory of modem culture raised by Lim, wha is a dominant paradigm based on the evolution theory or the literary universality. It emphases the creativity of the writer. The writership is newly fanned by the students who study aboard like Lee, Kwang-su. They also emphasis the creativity of the production of literary work. They think that their writing has to form out of nothing.
But this attitude is very dangerous because in the concept of literary universality there are imperialistic orders in the form of aesthetics. The other side, it is dangerous to us only differences and specialities of our literary history are subjectively and mythically emphasize. The real values of 'Sinsosul' are just here.
In some aspects, 'Sinsosul' is represented as a true picture of the modernity of that society. 'Sinsosul' is more meaningful than a transitional form from ancient narratives to modem novel. Until now the study of 'Sinsosul' Limited to a few writers, especially Lee, In-jik, are problematic.
The major part of 'Sinsosul' is not the writership but the readership. It is also gradually changing into a new literary environment, but it acts only on already existing facts.
There are the reasons why many of the 'Sinsosul' are published and having read together with modem novel. The real end of 'Sinsosul' is not coming with the birth of modem literature, but with the replace of the old-reader to the new reader at the middle of 1920. Someone accepted this as very venturous one without actual proofs, but this already arouses enough sympathy from many other researcher of modem literature.
