This thesis examines the representation manner of subalterns related with sexuality in modern novels of Korea at 1920s ~ 1930s. The subaltern femme fatales were appeared in large numbers in many novels, Kim, Dong-In's [Potato], Na, Do-Hyang's [Mulberry], etc. Figure of the subaltern femme fatales represented in these novels has originated from that of new women at 1920s. New women were represented as immoral, lewd, and greedy beings in many discourses. Especially, novels played a decisive role in this image making of new women. The subaltern femme fatales were the extreme figures of new woman. Like this, the representation manner of the subaltern overlapped sexuality of women, which had a close connection with self-definition of male elites. As it were, constructing subject as modern self, male elites made women and the subaltern the negative reference points. Another examples can be found in expressing subalterns as sexual and natural beings in novels of the middle and late 1930s. In these novels, males of the lower classes were appeared in the incarnation of masculinity, which, to compensate their weakness, male elites projected their desire on to. Here, however, it needs to be remembered that sexual and natural beings were represented only through subalterns and women.
These images of subalterns and women also were produced by colonialism including orientalism Standardizing geography and race, the colonizer constructed the rank of "civilization" and justified discrimination and government against the colonized. Similarly, self-definition of male elites in the colony Korea was based on the concept of civilization, only replacing the standards of the colonizer by gender and class. In other words, male elites imitated the colonizer by representing subalterns and women as humble bodies. I think this representation manner of the other is continued to be reproduced up to now. It could be proved through Korean cognition of alien workers from Southeast Asia and the Chosun from China. They have be represented as only beings of 'to-be-looked-ness' or humble demons using a dialect through mass media. I think this textual attitude origins from Korean novels in 1920s - 1930s.
