The purpose of this thesis is to study on the relation of modernization and traditional crafts in Korea in 1960' s. The object of tbis thesis is Lee Cheong-Joon's, early works, Jool, Gwanyeok and Maejabee. Those novels treated traditional craftsman. Those characters were a tightrope walker, a bowman and a hawker each other.
The modernization was started from 1960' s in Korea. In this period, an aspect of modernization was summarized development of industry, establishment of inderstrial capital, inflow of western culture and institutions. Generally speaking, Korea's modernization was industrialization by capitalism, and many Korean made light of a way of traditional because they were old types. But some way of traditional had mental values. At last, modernization gave material affluent but it took away many mental values.
Those Lee's works show to be expiated traditional crafts through the process of modernization in Korea. A funambulist, A bowman and a hawker wanted their pride of profession, but they failed by social environment that was effected of capitalism. These craftsmen opposed to deal with simply a technician and hated to regard their crafts as moneymaking.
In addition to their crafts were impossible to succeed by death of their successor or successor had deformity. As a result of analysis on the Lee Cheong- Joon's novels, we could discover a sacrifices of some traditional mental values in the dark side of modernization.
