This paper empirically proves the effects of the contingent relationships among information technology (IT) investment, strategic application level of information systems (IS) and perceived environmental uncertainty (PEU) on the financial performance of a firm. The results show that if the PEU is low, IT investment with the high level of strategic application increases the firm's performance, such as the cost of production per unit of output (CPO), perceived financial performance (PFP) and perceived nonfinancial performance (PNP). However, in overhead cost per unit of output (OCO), the result is contrary to Hypothesis. IT investment of high strategic application increases OCO. On the other hand, when the PEU is high, IT investment in case of the high level of strategic application, rather, decreases the financial performance. Based on empirical results, we suggest the situations that IT investment causes the decrease of performance, and also, the conditions under which the investment in IT improves firm's financial gains.
