This work presents a method for optimization of the total weight of
double-layer grids using a nonlinear programming(NLP) approach. The
design problem is expressed as a constrained optimization problem in
which the optimum values of the design variables are sought, while
the design constraints are satisfied. The design variables are the
number of modules, the diameter of the chord members and the
diamether of the diagonal web members, the thickness of the pipes
and the depth of the truss. The design constraints consist of bounds
on member stress, buckling of members and slenderness ratio of
members. The constrained optimization problem is transformed into a
sequence of unconstrained problem, each of which is, in turn, solved
by a series of one-dimensional minimization problems.
