The Purpose of this research is to grasp the spatial needs of
the three generation family, thereby to suggest some major
concepts which can be used as basic desing guidelines for a
three generation family apartment. This apartment was verified
to be an ideal housing model for future Korean culture.
Data were collected through questionnaire survey from 694
housewives of the three generation family households.
Result showed that most respondents want to be separated from
their old parents. This tendency, however, changed once a housing
alternative for the three generation living was assumed to be
developed. Their acceptance of a three generation family apartment
was very much positive. The Most preferred alternative housing
units were identified. The desirable proportions of the unit
alternatives were 49% for the single unit, 19% for the two connected
unit, 10% for the two separate units within a building, and 22%
for the two separate units in different buildings within an
apartment community.
