This study is to analyse Viollet-le-Duc(1814~1879)'s architectural theory in order to search the basic thoughts of modern architecture and to define concretely its influence on modern architects, especially who played active parts late in the 19th and early in the 20th century. He originated the rational theory -particularly including Structural Rationalism, Regionalism and Morality of Architecture-so as to settle architectural conflicts and to give the direction of the future. Early modern architects-Gaudi, Guimard, Berlage, Horta and so on -accepted his theory as their design principles and developed it in their own ways. It enabled Henri Labrouste to make more extensive use of the material in the National Library and St. Genevieve; Anatole de Baudot to develop a non-classical form of architecture to be derived in an absolute sense from the logic of its structure and the mode of its construction; Hector Guimard to realize structural Rationalism in Humbert de Romans Antonio Gaudi to use the traditional Catalan vault; H.P.Berlage to join with his fanatical zeal for truth at any price to produce a building which served as a guidepost to many; Victor Horta to introduce iron into the house. Therefore, his architectural theory has been closely connected with the thoughts of modern architecture as are generally known.
