한 나라의 건축은 그 나라의 민족성과, 자연조건과 건축이 이루어진 시간을 각각 독립변수로 볼때, 표시되는 종속변수(함수)라 말 할 수 있다. 따라서 과거의 건축물을 분석하므로서, 추출 되는 여러 요소들을 검토하고 종합하여 현대및 미래의 건축에 어떻게 적용 되어야 할 것인가를 고찰해 보는 것이 우리의 할 바가 아닌가 한다. 막대한 우리나라의 고건축 자료 중에서 이조시대의 궁궐배치에 관해서 취급한 이유는 우리나라 건축은 궁궐건축을 위주로 영위되어 왔고, 또한 그중에서 삼국시대로 부터 고려까지의 궁궐 및 도성은 유구가 남아 있지 않아서 우선 현존하는 이조 5대궁의 배치계획에 관해서 고찰해 보기로 한 것이다. 이 테마(theme)를 다루는데 있어서 우선 이조 이전의 건축에 영향을 끼친 역사적 배경에 대해서 약술하고, 그 다음에 사상적 배경을 논하여 이것들이 어떻게 실재로 조선왕궁 배치에 영향을 미쳤나를 분석 검토하고, 마지막으로 분석된 요소를 종합하여 결론을 내릴까 한다.
